Systemic low-grade inflammation, a new paradigm to be explored

Chronic systemic low-grade inflammation is a type of inflammation that often evolves insidiously, and is closely linked to lifestyle and the exposome (everything a patient is exposed to in their environment). It arises mainly in the intestine. The altered microbiota and overly permeable intestinal membrane no longer ensure a proper barrier function, allowing the abnormal passage of molecules and microorganisms that excessively activate the underlying immune system, in turn triggering a cascade of dysimmune and inflammatory phenomena. These phenomena progressively spread to the body’s organs, vessels, and tissues. This inflammation silently alters the body’s internal functioning, leading, depending on the patient’s predispositions, to the onset of various chronic diseases.
